Women and Literacy Project

Access to the words and ideas of women is on e of the primary ways in which women's lives are enriched, changed and improved. Amazon was founded on the belief that all women should have access to the diversity of women's ideas and to writings that tell t ruths about women's lives. All women -- including women who struggle with reading -- should have access to the writings of women on the wide range of issues and topics concerning us.

Amazon Bookstore has initiated a long-term effort to address issues pertaining to women and literacy:

• Offering New Readers Book Groups for women
• Maintaining a section of literacy materials
• Providing volunteer training and placement
• Developing women-centered accessible materials for book groups

If you register your book group with Amazon, we can order the books you need AND offer a 10% discount on those books to your participants.

AMAZON BOOKSTORE WANTS YOUR USED BOOKS! ! !

Amazon Bookstore sells used books -- consistent with the types of books we generally sell. We invite our customers to bring us books you no longer want. We will give you store credit or buy them, whichever you prefer. Please follow these simple guideli nes:

• Books should be in good condition. They can have that "already been read" feel about them, but we do not want books with tattered or torn covers, beverage stains, highlighting or writing in them. . .you get the idea.

• Subjects in which we are especially interested include: lesbian fiction, lesbian/gay nonfiction, spirituality, psychology/recovery, health, "women's studies," gender studies, cookbooks, fiction, science fiction and mysteries, and auto/biographies - - as long as they are within the range of new books we normally carry. We will also consider books on other subjects.

• Books will be accepted on scheduled dates or may be left for future consideration. Call the store for dates and times. If the books are left for consideration, they MUST be boxed or wrapped and clearly marked with your name. When books ar e left, please allow 2 weeks for processing. We will call you with the amount. You must take back the books we don't want to buy.

• We encourage your on-going support of Amazon and, therefore, offer you the option of store credit for the used books you bring in. We will pay 25% of the cover price if you accept store credit. The credit may be used on ANY items in the store. I f you prefer cash, we will pay 15% of the cover price. We reserve the right to offer a higher or lower percentage based on the title and its condition.

• A Wish List box will be maintained for special requests. Though we will not formally begin a book search program, we will maintain a card file for customers wanting to find something in particular. Customers looking for certain titles can place a request for it in the box -- if it happens to show up, we'll let you know. (Please limit requests to five per customer at any given time.)
