Irises at Cat Whisker Ranch
These are some of the pictures of our iris beds here at Cat Whisker
Ranch. We have two iris beds. These pictures of them date from 1995.
- The front iris bed is the first, founded in 1992. It
contains a variety of irises, mostly purchased from the Minnesota
Iris Society's sales at the University of Minnesota's Landscape
Arboretum.
- The back iris bed was started later in 1992. All these irises
are the same variety of tall yellow iris. The front iris bed was
designed, the soil was carefully prepared, and a border was
selected. The back iris bed just happened because we were given
some irises and needed someplace to grow them.
In 1996 we divided our irises in the front iris bed and discovered that
we had an infestation of iris borers. We were not happy. We
wound up with many fewer irises than we had expected. We are not
looking forward to seeing how the back iris bed did, since we had not
divided that one. (We had hand-picked pupae of iris borers out in
front. There was no such control of the ones in back.)
