Samuel J. Matthews
Samuel was born on 28 February 1863 in Prompton, Wayne County, Pennsylvania.

In 1870 he was living at home in Spring Brook Township, then Luzerne County.

In 1880 Samuel lived in Wilkes Barre where he was a clerk.

Samuel married Ivy Marjorie Seltzer on 18 April 1893. She was born in Indiana in 1869 and died in Olyphant on 30 May 1930.

In 1900 Samuel lived in Olyphant, on Delaware St, where he was postmaster.

In 1910 was postmaster, living in Olypant on Delaware Ave.

In 1920 he lived on 302 Delaware Ave., Olyphant, Pennsylvania.

The 1925 city directory shows he lived at 302 Delaware with son Carl W. and wife Madge.

In 1930 he was post office manager and living in Olyphant, at 302 Delaware.

Samuel married second Annie Elias Matthews who was first married to his brother Thomas. She was born July 1869 in Pennsylvania and died in 1950.

He served 32 years as Postmaster, Olyphant.

"S. J. Matthews - One of the representative men of Olyphant is S.J. Mathews, who has served as postmaster for many years. He was born at Prompton, Wayne County, PA, Feb. 28, 1863, the son of Rev. R. and Catherine (Evans) Mathews. Rev. R. Mathews was born in Wales in 1833. He was an early settler of PA and a minister of the Presbyterian Church at Olyphant. He died in 1917, and his wife died in 1892. Rev. and Mrs. Mathews were the parents of the following children: John, retired, lives in Scott Township; Catherine, lives in Springbrook Twp.; and S. J., the subject of this sketch. The following children are deceased: Elizabeth, Daniel, William, Richard, Edward, Thomas, and Benjamin. S.J. Mathews was 7 years of age when his parents removed to Lackawanna County and settled in Springbrook Twp. He remained at home until 1881, when he engaged in the general mercantile business at Olyphant. Mr. Mathews continued in this line of work until 1902, when he retired. He has served as postmaster of Olyphant continuously since 1898 with the exception of the administration of Pres. Woodrow Wilson. He has always been prominent in the affairs of the city and served as burgess for 2 terms. The local post office employs 4 city carriers, 3 clerks, and one rural carrier. Free delivery service was instituted here in 1914. On June 13, 1894, Mr. Mathews was united in marriage with Miss Marjorie Seltzer, of Turon, Kansas. They have 3 children: Marjorie, born in 1896, married Howard Adams Brown, lives at East Orange, N.J.; Carl, born June 13, 1898, lives at Olyphant; and Kenneth, twin brother of Carl. Kenneth Mathews is a graduate of Olyphant High School, Lehigh University, and in 1927 was graduated from the Law School of the Univ. of PA. He is now engaged in the practice of his profession in Philadelphia. He married Miss Sarah Edwards, of Olyphant, and they have 2 children, Kenneth, Jr., and Gwendolyn. Mr. Mathews has always been a Republican. He is a member and trustee of the Presbyterian Church and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, Knights of Malta, and Modern Woodmen of America."

Samuel died in 1949, in Olyphant, Pennsylvania.
