The Steed
I've had this Cannondale since August '92, and as of 29 Nov '07, we've seen 60,000 miles together. The pedals were replaced with Onza HO clipless pedals several years ago and those replaced with Shimano clipless in '01 and again in '05. '06 saw an upgrade from 7- to 9-speed, with Ultegra STI added. I built a new set of wheels (XTR hubs and Mavic A719 rims, with black DT Swiss double-butted spokes) in August '06. April '07 was the end of the original Exage 400 front derailleur (XT replacement), and Exage crank (Ultegra triple replacement). The lightly-constructed Cannondale rack was replaced years ago with a Blackburn Expedition, and of course waterbottle cages have been added (prior to creating the picture, but I never did get around to quite finishing it). One of the cages broke in June '07 from wear weakening it after 56k miles. Otherwise, general maintenance keeps the bike running just fine!
The picture was hand drawn in Microsoft Paintbrush back in '93. Windows 3.1 had just been introduced to the Unisys 1100/2200 Exec mainframe development department, and I had a whopping 8M RAM and VGA on my new PC at work, so I decided to go for creating the ultimate desktop picture. Several lunch breaks went into the effort, along with a few operating system builds, lengthy emulations, and other mundane, mainframe operating system development tasks.
