HistoryLincoln County dates its "beginning" from the Land Run of September 22, 1891, which opened to public settlement three Indian reservations adjoining the former Unassigned Lands on the east, and was named in honor of Abraham Lincoln. See a brief history of the county and biography of George Chandler, for whom the county seat was named, for more information.Chandler, the county seat, is on old Route 66 and nearly midway between Tulsa to the East, and Oklahoma City, to the West. |

The Coordinator is John Matthews and I maintain the Lincoln County, Oklahoma GenWeb page. While I live in Minnesota, I have roots in Lincoln County. My grandfather, Hiram Clark (McGaughey Jr.) Adams was born in Chandler in 1906. His father, Hiram Clark McGaughey Sr., had the first general store (originally the Sac and Fox general store, then the McGaughey-Cunningham store) and was elected mayor in 1904. My g-g-grandfather, James Franklin Ayars, came to the county in 1892 and was county commissioner and county treasurer. My g-g-g-grandfather, Henry M. Mitchell, opened the Mitchell House hotel in 1891. Please let me know if you would like to contribute your information to this page. If you would like to adopt a county in Oklahoma, please visit our Orphan County Site. Read here to find out more about the Oklahoma GenWeb project. |
