Here
I am working on Saint Paul's shoulder.
This provides a sense of the scale involved.

Picture
of 3 clay models. The small study sketch or "bozzetto" was my
presentation to win the commission. Then I created a fully detailed model
at one-half actual size to work out the details and modifications. I then
created the full size model from which I made molds for the bronze castings.

After
taking plster molds of the sculpture in 65 separate sections, I poured
wax impressions and then heat fused them back together into larger circumferential
sections, reworked the details, and then brought them to the foundry for
bronze casting.

The
foundry recut the wax into smaller sections, cast them and then welded
them together into larger sections. I then grinded and filed the excess
metal and the welded seams back to the original surface. Here can be seen
some of the detailed carving that went into the sword, which represents
not only the device of Saint Paul's matrydom, but more importantly, the
sword of Truth which was the anchor of his mission.

The completed
statue being brought into the Saint Paul Cathedral, a French Renaissance
styled architectural masterpiece built in 1915. The sculpture was put in
place by the capable hands of Murphy Rigging and Erecting, Inc., while I
looked on with no worries whatsoever, other than
remaining in an articulate state for the media. |
